Rebecca started teaching R how to read in February 2008, about 16 months ago. After some deliberation of teaching techniques and resources, we decided to use the highly-rated SRA DISTAR method. We got the book Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons as the style and pace of the instruction seemed to match what we felt our style is. While I haven’t tracked her daily progress very closely, I have seen glimpses of all the hard work both Rebecca and R have put into this learning process. I am extraordinarily proud of what the two of them have accomplished together; Rebecca’s devotion and dedication to teaching and R’s persistance are really paying off.

See for yourself! The video below shows R reading me a Clifford book while I was feeling under the weather. (more after the video)

I’m so thrilled to see her progress, especially as she has started to take an increasing interest in reading on her own. To me, reading is the foundation of all learning and as R seems to have mind designed for rapid learning, I think she’s going to realize the import of her new skill very soon.

I’m also excited as Rebecca has started teaching Z to read as well. Z finally mastered her alphabet and letter sounds and has really taken to reading and writing fairly naturally. She has the added benefit of having studied R while her sister was progressing through the lessons. I wouldn’t be surprised if Z’s progress went even faster (I could extoll the benefits of multi-age homeschooling here, but I’ll save that for another post).

As an added bonus, I anticipate long car rides becoming much more tolerable as the girls develop the ability to entertain themselves with books!
