Know thyself to reach your potential

temet01

temet nosce

The Latin phrase (more formally nosce te ipsum) is roughly translated “Know thyself” in the Movie “The Matrix” when Neo is visiting the Oracle for the first time. In the movie, Neo must begin to understand his own purpose and abilities in order to do what he needs to do to rescue humankind.

While you may never need to conquer an artificial intelligence that has enslaved the human race, it is worth pausing to reflect on what it means to know yourself.

If you’re familiar with opera – or even, like me – if you don’t follow that form of theater whatsoever – you may have heard of the baritone Nathan Gunn. This beefy stud muffin is known for displaying his chiseled pecs on stage during many of his performances. And, as the image here shows, with good reason. At age 39, Gunn has an amazing physique (insert man crush joke here).

A recent Wall Street Journal article details his secrets to fitness. While his dietary habit of eating just one meal a day (dinner) would not work for me, what struck me most was two key aspects of his fitness routine.

One, he shies away from free weights, preferring body weight exercises like pushups and pullups. This is partly because he doesn’t want to get a lot of bulk (like low-rep, high-weight exercises tend to do). But, more importantly, it’s because his traveling schedule often forces him to work out in hotel rooms without special equipment. Having subscribed to the P90X fitness regimen for some time now, I can attest to the effectiveness of bodyweight exercises as a punishing start to most of my mornings. The routines are also portable, meaning I can (but often do not) do them when visiting family and I’m away from my free weights.

The second key was a recognition of his own physical limitations:

Mr. Gunn’s knees have weakened over the years, so he will do short sprints instead of long-distance running about twice a week. He will sprint in short intervals for 30 minutes at a time. If he doesn’t run, he will do a 45-minute stint on a stationary bicycle.

Personally, I’ve railed against my own weak joints for years, believing I could punish them enough to become stronger. Now that I’m in my mid-30s, however, I realize that doing so actually works against my goals, as I end up being more tired or injured, extending the time between my workouts. Accepting the limitations of my body could help me focus on those areas of fitness for which I’m best designed and bring a greater sense of peace about where I’m at (i.e., not looking like Nathan Gunn).

Of course, laying off the extra slice of cake wouldn’t hurt either. ;)

Beware the age-inappropriate movie trailer

According to the Chicago Sun-Times (via Common Sense Media), be prepared to skip the movie trailers the next time you take your kids to the theater or pop in a DVD.

movietrailerscreen

Since April 2009, movie previews are no longer “approved for all audiences.” Anyone familiar with the famous “green band” (green intro screen) knows that this phrase has appeared on nearly all trailers shown before most movies not R-rated. “All audiences” and the green color associated with G movies conveyed that regardless of the material in the movie being promoted, the trailer would contain material suitable for even the youngest of children.

However, the Motion Picture Association of America‘s Classification and Ratings Board changed its policy earlier this year so that these promotional clips no longer need to be suitable for “general” audiences. The green-band language now reads “approved for appropriate audiences” – without mention of what “appropriate” means. One would think that a G rated movie would include only G rated trailers, a PG movie would include PG and G rated trailers, etc. But according to many reports from parents, this simply isn’t the case.

Worse, the change was made without any attempt to communicate or engage the movie watching public (especially parents).

For logistical and financial reasons, we don’t often take the kids to the theater to watch a movie. With a HDTV and surround sound at home, Netflix is more than able to meet our media dietary needs. And with the remote in hand, we typically skip the previews. But I have noticed a couple times recently when we put in a PG-13 movie (after the kids are asleep) that some of the previews are decidedly “PG-14″ and above.

This is disappointing as we are very careful to choose what television shows and movies the kids watch. To think our efforts could be sabotaged by a careless change to the MPAA policy and inappropriately edited previews is frustrating.

Breaking the silence!

It’s not you, it’s me. Seriously. I want to provide breaking news about what’s going on with our family, but I find that with each additional child, my blogging time diminishes. As does my photo-posting time. And videos…well, you can kiss those good-bye.

All right, so I’m being somewhat facetious. But I obviously have not set these things as priorities. So, let’s get caught up, shall we:

  • C turns 11 weeks today! As a birthday present (from her to the rest of the family), she has blessed us with nearly a week of sleeping through the night. And not the “night” that pediatricians define as about 5-6 hours. We’re talking she goes to bed at 10:00PM and gets up at around 8:00AM. WOW! Thanks, C, you couldn’t have found a better gift!!!
  • In two days, M turns 2 years old! Wow, our “little one” isn’t so little anymore! While she’s battling the temptations of the terrible twos, M turned a leaf a couple months ago and started to be an amazing little girl. At two, her gross and fine motor skills are simply amazing. As a trade-off, however, her verbal skills haven’t caught up yet. She’s a master of using gestures and sound effects, which is often hilarious. But we’re being diligent to help her master language.
  • R is in “Kindergarten!” Technically, Kindergarten is in our dining room. That’s right, we’re officially homeschoolers! Because having four kids – one of them a nursing infant – wasn’t enough of a challenge for Rebecca, she decided to take on homeschooling R this year. More seriously, I’ll explain in more detail our decision to homeschool in an upcoming post.
  • Z starts dance class! This week, Z will have her first dance class and she is so excited. After watching R have fun with dance last year, she is looking forward to participating herself. R is also enrolled for her second year, and the girls will have their classes back-to-back. Should make for an interesting new evening schedule, but they are both excited about it.

We’re also looking forward to our Fall celebrations – birthdays, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s – and carefully considering our social agenda and how to make things work with our newly expanded family.

I have a ton of new photos to upload to the site, so stay tuned to another post soon with links to galleries from July and August. And maybe – just maybe – I’ll carve out some time to post up some new videos, too!

Welcome to our family C Grace!

On Tuesday, June 30, C Grace entered the world at 6:15 PM. She weighed 7 lbs, 15 oz and was 21 inches long. She has beautiful long fingers and toes and amazingly long eyelashes!

Mom and C are doing great and plan to come home this morning. Check out the gallery for more photos (which, unfortunately, are mostly lo-res; since the pending video is in HD, that should compensate for the mistake)! Dad and the other girls are taking one day at a time – everyone is still on an anxiety-high after the final weeks of waiting for C and the excitement over wanting her to come home!

Now that we have a new member of our family, I suppose I’ll have to update the site banner graphic! While I’m at it, I may change the entire theme, so don’t be surprised if you see major changes here!

C Grace
